[2020-09-08] Webinar: Operating a Not-for-profit During a Pandemic – Navigating Key Issues in a Crisis

The global pandemic and resulting shutdown has affected Australia’s not-for-profit (NFP) sector in unique and significant ways.

This webinar will discuss emergent issues for the governance and operations of NFPs during the ongoing pandemic crisis and provide practical insights and real world solutions.

The webinar will cover the following four key topics:

Pandemic pressures – easing financial and operational stress through mergers and collaborations (Michael Coker)
The COVID-19 pandemic has both created and exacerbated financial and operational stresses faced by organisations in the NFP and charity sectors. Michael will outline a number of corporate and commercial initiatives that organisations can pursue to increase the chances of surviving, and even flourishing, in these very trying circumstances. The session will also identity many practical issues organisations will face in implementing a merger or collaboration, referring to real world examples.

Employment law – transitioning to our new normal (Tim Capelin)
As we come to the realisation that it is too early to think about a post-pandemic world, we need to consider how NFPs operate in the world between lock down and pre-pandemic conditions. Tim will identify the employment issues relevant to NFP organisations and provide practical takeaways for HR managers and in-house counsel.

Regulatory and contractual relief – giving breathing room to NFPs (Andrew Rankin)
Andrew will discuss the pandemic related relief that has been granted by the regulators, including ACNC, ASIC and NDIS, to excuse NFPs from meeting their legislative obligations in these challenging times and also the application of force majeure clauses to relieve an NFP from performing contractual obligations due to the pandemic.

Royal Commissions: Finding a way to proceed during a pandemic (Tom Griffith)
Despite the pandemic, the Aged Care Royal Commission, Disability Royal Commission and Black Summer (Bushfires) Royal Commission have all found ways to continue their work. Tom will explain how they have gone about doing so, with particular focus on the Disability Royal Commission. He will also include some reminders about what organisations can do to prepare themselves.

Facilitated by Sarah Johnson, Head of Piper Alderman’s national Not-for-Profit Group.
