Advances Precedent-Setting Competition Case

On June 28, 2007 Vilnius Regional Administrative Court adopted its decision in Mažeikių nafta abuse of dominance case whereby the court declared that Competition Council’s decision to impose fine of LTL 32 mln. (approx. EUR 9,28 mln.) on Lithuanian oil refinery Mažeikių nafta for violations of competition law was unfounded and void.

To date, this has been the largest historical competition lawsuit in Lithuania and the first case in all the Baltic States of direct application of the EU law by the Competition Council. Regardless of the outcome of the lawsuit, it will undoubtedly be an important precedent for the future application of competition law rules in Lithuania...
