Brouse McDowell and Thacker Robinson Zinz (TRZ) today announced that the lawyers of TRZ will be joining Brouse McDowell effective July 31, 2018.
Operating under the name Brouse McDowell, the combined firm will consist of more than 80 attorneys across five offices, including four in Ohio – Akron, Cleveland, Toledo, and Youngstown. This combination will add a dozen attorneys to Brouse McDowell’s 70 attorneys, including partners Stacy RC Berliner, Suzanne Bretz Blum, Joseph K. Cole, Brandi L. Doniere, Andrew W. Miller, Marquettes D. Robinson, Joseph P. Thacker, Kimberly J. Todd, and Marguerite E. Zinz, of counsel Richard S. Walinski, and associates Nicholas J. Kopcho and Teresa G. Santin.
The transaction brings together two powerhouse firms renowned for insurance recovery and commercial litigation work as well as sophisticated legal practices in several other areas. The combination will grow the firm’s footprint in the insurance recovery space, with more than 25 attorneys concentrating in this area, including 8 of the 26 Insurance Coverage Law Specialists certified by the Ohio State Bar Association. It will also expand the firm’s coverage in commercial litigation to include a wider variety of matters arising out of contract disputes, business tort claims, and corporate control issues. The combination will result in broader client offerings and industry capabilities, notably including the addition of an experienced litigation/discovery management practice.
Marc B. Merklin, Managing Partner of Brouse McDowell, believes the transaction will create a formidable presence in Ohio and nationally in insurance recovery. “The combination of the lawyers of these two firms creates the largest and most sophisticated insurance recovery group representing the interests of policyholders in the State of Ohio, with lawyers who are also capable of and engaged in a national practice. Combined with our existing full service business model serving large and mid-size businesses, in a variety of industries including manufacturing and health care, this solidifies our presence in this market.”
Marguerite E. Zinz, TRZ’s President, also looks forward to what the union will mean for clients. “The firms share similar cultures, particularly in the desire to always put clients first and provide exceptional legal counsel and service. That made this transaction very appealing on all sides. The combined experience and practice areas of both firms create exciting opportunities to serve clients in new areas and new ways all with the same attention and quality to which our clients have grown accustomed.”
The two firms share similar commitments to the community equal to that of their passion for client service. Attorneys and staff at both firms have participated as board members and volunteers in more than 150 professional, civic and community organizations throughout the state of Ohio, earning distinguished reputations as corporate citizens. Further, a shared commitment to diversity and inclusion has allowed both firms to work most effectively for an increasingly diverse clientele. TRZ is a certified woman-owned firm, as a majority of its shareholders are women, while approximately half of Brouse McDowell's practice group chairs are women.
This announcement follows Brouse McDowell’s combination with Canfield-based Nadler Nadler and Burdman Co., LPA, in late 2016, which expanded the firm’s coverage in the greater Youngstown area, to serve the legal needs of businesses in Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.
