Tamrat is a graduate of Addis Ababa University and a holder of a masters degree in International Trade Law from the University of Turin and Turin School of Development.

He has over 12 years of professional experience in the practice of Ethiopian law where he has served as an assistant judge of the Federal First Instance and Supreme Courts and later as a practitioner since his admission to the bar in the year 2002.

Tamrat has considerable experience in investment law, international trade law and has provided Ethiopian legal advice to corporate clients - both local and international. More specifically, he has assisted foreign investors in entry, establishment, and legal aspects of their operations, including finance, employment, tax and litigation, and exit. In the area of intellectual property he has extensive experience in trademark filing, maintenance and protection having served as an Ethiopian agent to many largefirms.

Tamrat has published the one and only Electronic Database of Ethiopian Laws, “Negarit Gazeta”, on CD-ROM. This database, updated, quarterly, is used by the Federal Courts Ethiopia and almost all practicing lawyers and educational institutions and organizations. He has also facilitated the compilation of a human rights database that was funded by United Nations Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights for use by the Human Rights Commission of Ethiopia.

He has contributed to the World Banks Group’s Investing Across the Borders Survey,, where he provided detailed Ethiopian law advice on:

  • Investing Across Sectors (on FDI ownership restrictions across various sectors)
  • Starting a Foreign Investment (on establishing a foreign-owned subsidiary, special economic zones and access to industrial land)
  • Employing Skilled Expatriates (on immigration law and the applicable legal framework concerning temporary work permits)
  • Converting and Transferring Currency (on restrictions to currency convertibility and the transfer of foreign currency across borders)
  • Arbitrating and Mediating Disputes (on international and domestic commercial disputes submitted to alternative dispute resolution)

He is a member of the Ethiopian Bar Association.
