The case of the former Prime Minister is one of the most resonant cases in the history of Moldova. For the first time, since the declaration of independence of Moldova to the present day, a former Prime Minister is arrested.
Former deputy was arrested on October 15th in 2015, directly in Parliament. After that, the general Prosecutor requested Vlad Filat's parliament immunity to be waived and pressed charges: passive corruption and influence peddling.
On the behalf of Vlad Filat the lawyers of Popa & Associates have provided legal services to the trial court - Buiucani Court and court of appeal - Court of Appeal.
During 12 months, time that the trial lasted in both courts, lawyers have revealed abuses and illegalities that prosecutors and magistrates have constantly committed in the examination of this case.
Igor Popa declared to the mass-media that this case is politically charged and built at someone's orders, and that the main purpose was to remove Vlad Filat from the political arena of the country.
In January of 2017, the team of lawyers, led by Igor Popa, lodged an appeal to the Supreme Court.
Once the final instance is exposed, the defenders of the former Prime Minister will appeal the decision to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and will request acquittance of the deputy Vlad Filat.
We mention that on December 8th, 2015 Igor Popa filed a complaint with the ECHR. On the behalf of his client, the defense complained on the conditions of detention and the lack of reasons for the taken decision to arrest Vlad Filat.
Lawyers expect the ECHR to expose on the admissibility of the request.
