Two New Partners, 8 Elevations and Appointments at Carter Newell

Carter Newell Lawyers (Queensland, Australia) is pleased to welcome to the partnership, Tony Stumm, Corporate lawyer and Andrew Shute, Litigation and Dispute Resolution lawyer.

 

Tony is a highly experienced corporate lawyer who has worked on the regulatory side of corporate affairs and key transactions. Tony has been a partner at a major Queensland firm and prior to that worked at ASIC in various roles within the regulation division and investigations area.

Andrew joined Carter Newell’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution team as a Special Counsel in 2010, having previously been a senior associate at a national firm. Andrew has over 15 years’ experience in commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution most recently with a particular focus on the resources sector. In encouraging the use of technology to deliver more efficient and cost effective outcomes, Andrew was a member of the Documents and Litigation sub-group of the Supreme Court of Queensland's Better Resolution Group, and is the Chairperson of the Queensland Branch of the Association of Legal Support Managers. He is also a member of the Litigation Rules Section committee of the Queensland Law Society.

Carter Newell also welcomes Lawrie Ward, Consultant to the firm. Lawrie is an experienced corporate lawyer having worked for the past 15 years in the areas of corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and commercial law. Prior to joining Carter Newell, Lawrie was a corporate partner at a national firm.

In addition, seven other staff have been elevated to Senior Associates and Associates. These elevations are across five of the firm’s specialised practice areas being Resources, Commercial Property, Insurance, Aviation, and Litigation and Dispute Resolution.

Elevated to Senior Associate are Kelly Pain (Resources) and Karen Brown (Commercial Property) and elevated to Associate are Milton Latta (Insurance), Emma Topen (Insurance), Ryan Stehik (Insurance), Christian Breen (Aviation) and David Fisher (Litigation and Dispute Resolution).

Kelly Pain, Senior Associate, assists clients in the resources sector including the sale and acquisition of tenement and joint venture interests, the establishment and operation of mining and petroleum joint ventures, the negotiation of infrastructure and transportation arrangements and negotiating and drafting agreements relating to the procurement of various services in the resources sector.

Karen Brown, Senior Associate, acts for developers, shopping centre owners and managers, retirement village operators, hoteliers, tourism operators, financial institutions and commercial agents in all forms of commercial property transactions.

Milton Latta, Associate, handles all aspects of personal injury and property liability claims. Prior to commencing his legal career, Milton worked in the engineering field in a range of roles including product development and quality service management.

Emma Topen, Associate, is an experienced defendant insurance lawyer advising clients with respect to indemnity, liability, quantum and contribution issues. Prior to commencing her legal career, Emma worked as a specialist construction insurance broker for an international broking company.

Ryan Stehlik, Associate, has extensive experience in insurance, risk management and general commercial litigation. He has managed complex matters for a number of insurers and private clients which have involved general public and product liability claims, marine and personal injuries claims.

Christian Breen, Associate, acts for a range of aviation clients including national and international insurers, national and regional airports, airlines, companies providing ancillary support to the airline and airport industry, licensed aircraft maintenance engineers and various government agencies. Christian works with aviation clients on matters occurring in Australian jurisdictions, Papua New Guinea and the Asia-Pacificregion.

David Fisher, Associate, has assisted clients in a wide range of commercial disputes across the building, financial and property sectors. In addition, David has provided advice to large national and international companies and their directors with respect to review of D&O insurance cover, and policy responses to large claims involving legal liability, business interruption and loss of profit.
